college basketball champions?

i've been looking at a list of ncaa division 1 national champions and i noticed most teams have a pretty shallow bench. those teams typically have about a total of 8 or 9 guys on the whole team plus the head coach (some even have as few as 7) . and it's a rare thing to find a team with a full 12 man roster. i just want to know why this is.

  1. most likely because the stars played most of the game so a big roster wasnt necissary
  2. must be looking at some older teams, its the same as nowdays.....only the good play......plus not many kids played back then.....they were made to stick around and help with the farm..
  3. The answer is in recruiting. Each team tries to get the top recruits. Naturally, they get spread around the nation but in a league where the best players leave early for the NBA, coaches want to get the most out of these "top" guys. At the same time, most schools aren't lucky enough to have more than a couple top recruits each year. So... at best they will have a couple guys in each class (senior, junior, soph, freshman) who are their "priorities". These guys get all the playing time and when a new class comes in... the starting lineup shifts to make room for the incoming guys. In short... with the revolving door, you have to play your best players NOW because eventually they WILL be gone. Recruiting the guys that will go to the NBA after their freshman year will win championships because they are the best. Play them while you have them.
