How are NCAA Basketball rankings determined?
Memphis has the better record but not ranked number 1, but instead UNC is...why is that?

- Because UNC would probably beat them by 15-20 points. There are two main groups that determine the rankings. One poll asks coaches to rank the teams, the other asks sportswriters to rank them. Strength of schedule, common opponents, league reputation and recent record figure into the rankings, as do regional prejudices and TV familiarity. Last week, NC beat Duke, while Memphis lost recently to Tennessee, who then lost to Vanderbilt. The fact that both of these games were on TV means that the memory of these games are probably freshest in the voters' minds. In addition, Memphis plays in Conference USA and struggled against UAB earlier in the season, two strikes against an otherwise top notch team.
- Memphis lost as the #1 ranked team and the Coachs, and the Media felt they were the 3rd best team in the nation, behind Tennessee and UNC, since Tenn lost, UNC by defalt gets #1
