  1. You should check out the Better Basketball DVDs they advertise in SLAM magazine. They go over drills that specifically help you get better as a player by demonstrating it in game situations. Try it.
  2. shooting- make sure you are shooting in the correct form first. next, practice shooting from everywhere. also be honest about yourself and evalute what you would be best at: driving, mid-range, 3's, etc. and whatever that would be, practice very hard on that, and during extra time, practice on other stuff. (if you are a center, you shouldn't be practicing shooting 3's). dribbling- (once again if you are a center or power forward I wouldn't focus on this too much) Always practice dribbling with both hands. Practice dribbling fast up and down the court with one hand, then with the other. When you are dribbling, try not looking at the ball, look straight. In your free time, practice dribbling with a tennis ball (because it is smaller and harder to handle). Dribbling also requires footwork, ask your coach for all the footwork drills related to basketball. Also, learn to protect the ball, when you are driving to the basketball and when you have tough defense on you. Defense- defense can only be practiced by playing a lot of games. The key with defense is to stay low and try to picture what the player is going to do. Shuffle your feet and use your mind. If the player is quicker/faster than you, give that person some room, and vice versa. If the player is a shooter, get up on him/her, and vice versa. Defense also requires more than one person, communicate with your team at all times, if somebody blows past you, call for help. Only drill I can think of for defense is practice shuffling your feet and get a faster reaction time. Rebounding- box out. It helps to be tall and everything, but remember to box out. Time your jumping, and try to increase your vertical. Passing- practice to get your forearm and arms stronger to pass harder. Passing accurately can be practiced by playing more games. Don't frame your passes, and try to not make mistakes. The biggest drill of all: play as many pickup games of basketball as possible.
  3. Those DVDs are expensive. Get some cones instead, and: Shooting: Get someone (lil bro/sis) to pass you the ball as you come around the cone (using the cone like a screen) and then set up and shoot. Move to cone around to key parts on the floor. Dribbling. Set up a course with the cones and time yourself. Do it with your right hand, then left, then have some crossovers in the course. Defense: Set up cones and moves laterally. Get someone to jog towards you in a zigzag, and you keep with them. Make sure your feet don't cross and always keep your balance. Rebounding: Have someone shoot the ball, and put yourself in a position to get the ball. Good rebounding has two parts 1. Knowing where the ball is going after it hits the rim. This just takes repetitions. 2. Blocking out. Have whoever is shooting try and get the rebound, and you block them out. Let the ball hit the floor, just don't let them get to it. Passing: Cut out a piece of cardboard and put it on a garage door/big wall and just dribble and from different angles, pass it to the circle. Remember, practice does not make perfect. Practice makes permanent. If you are doing something wrong, and you practice that over and over, it will be much harder to correct yourself. Always have someone watching you to make sure your form is right, etc.
  4. Surely, you can practice by yourself but it is better if you could join a team or regulary play pick-up games, at least. Also, don't ignore conditioning. Try to run, at least 3 days a week. 5. Shooting- Practice free throws over and over again. Then start shooting them in different places. Then start moving your feet and jumping. Dribbling- Get a partner and two basketballs. Each of you start dribbling. Try to knock the ball out of the other persons hand while trying to save yours from being stolen. Defense- Get somebody taller and more athletic than you. Play a pick up game of 1-on-1. Rebounding- You need another person. Let them take and purposally miss shots. Grab the boards at their highest point. Passing- Get another person. Run down the court and pass to them the whole way.
  6. i am an okay basketball player, and my coach has taught me a few good pointers. 1. practice pure dribbling for at least 20 min. a day. practice with your weaker hand and if you know how, practice crossovers. 2. You should also try to do layups with your bad hand. 3. If you have a friend that knows how to play basketball and can play everyday, practice with him. Playing with other people can not only help improve your skills, it can also help you to become more competitive in a real game. Remember, practice makes perfect!
