Why do NCAA home teams wear the school colors for football, but basketball home teams wear white jerseys?

For example, the Univeristy of Tennessee wears orange jerseys for home football games. In basketball, however, UT wears white jerseys for home basketball games. Why is this?

1. its actually a basketball thing. you wear the white unis at home and the colors on the road. it happens in the pros and in high school too
2. I dont think its a rule, i thinks it tradition. In football, LSU wears home white due to tradition, however, they have to ask the visiting team if it is okay. Also, I believe that Georgetown's basketball team wears gray at home.
