Why are some jersey numbers illegal in NCAA Basketball?

00, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34, 35, 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 50, 52, 52, 53, 54, 55 are the only allowed jersey numbers in NCAA play....why?

  1. Ref hand signals when they report a foul to the bench. Notice no number in that list goes over 5?
  2. the refs are supposed to be able to hold up the person's number for fouls. they like to use 2 hands once. then 1 or 2 hands twice.
  3. Yeah it's interesting that they haven't changed that. In international ball everybody is between 4 and 15. NBA is more liberal but you may still have to petition to wear a number higher than 55. My favorite number was 7 but I only got to wear it in baseball and one basketball camp that was by international rules.
  4. The referee has to be able to signal the number of the person who fouled to the Scorer's table and do it with one hand. For instance, you couldn't do 77 with five fingers.
  5. they just dont like those numbers i guess
