What is the significance of the OVERALL #1 seed in the men's NCAA basketball tournament?

There are four regions and each has a number 1 seeded team. In addition there is an overall top seeded team. This year (2007), it's Florida. Why does the NCAA designate one team as being top-seeded? Does being seeded #1 confer any advantage on that team? If so, what is it?

  1. Not much other then, them being the favorite to win it all
  2. 1# seed per conference (meaning they are the best in that specific conference) 1# over all is the best team in the tourney all together. Being a number one seed gives you a better draw in the tourney. Meaning you play the worst teams first. So if you the number one in your conference then you play the worst team.
  3. The meaning of being a #1 seed means that the 4 teams won their conference and possible their tournament. They played a tougher schedule outside of their conference and won the games.(remember that schedules are made well in advance so you hope those teams will improve by the time you meet them). As a #1 you will play a weaker #16 team. Example 1-16,2-15,3-14etc. in the first round. That is the only advantage the teams have other than were they play. If they are lucky they will play close to home so their fans can travel to support them. Other than that there is no advantage or money to be given out. It helps only for the next years recruite class. That one student you want may change his mind and go to your school. To be a #1 seed is a congratulations for a great season from the tournament election board.
