- There was a time when it was rather common for the MOP to come from a losing team. But not today. The last MOP from a losing team was Akeem Olajuwon from Houston in 1983. Houston of course lost to Jim Valvano's N.C. State team. Here is the list of MOPs from teams that didn't win the championship. Jimmy Hull of Ohio State in 1939, Oregon won the championship B.J. Horn of Kansas in 1953, Indiana won the championship Hal Lear of Temple in 1956, San Francisco won the championship Wilt Chamberlain of Kansas in 1957, North Carolina won the championship Elgin Baylor of Seattle in 1958, Kentucky won the championship Jerry West of West Virginia in 1959, California won the championship Jerry Lucas of Ohio State in 1961, Cincinnati won the championship Art Heyman of Duke in 1963, Loyola of Illinois won the championship Bill Bradley of Princeton in 1965, UCLA won the championship Jerry Chambers of Utah in 1966, Texas Western won the championship Howard Porter of Villanova in 1971, UCLA won the championship. Porter was later declared ineligible and the award was vacated. Akeem Olajuwon of Houston in 1983, N.C. State won the championship
