9. The NCAA tournament is a 64 team field. From there it is separated into 4 smaller brackets known as Regional. The first game of the tournament is a play in game. The 64th and 65th team essentially play for the final seed in the tournament. The losing team would not actually be represented in the tournament. That's why the first game is called a "play-in game".
